Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian signage

Hara Design Institute was responsible for new signage in conjunction with the renovation of Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, a contemporary art museum in Lisbon, Portugal.

Inspired by the engawa (veranda) of Japanese houses, the building, which features a curved structure, was designed by architect Kengo Kuma to bring the building and nature together in this historic city.

The signage, bent at an obtuse angles, is designed to incorporate the curvilinear context of the architecture and it ordinarily blends in with the surroundings. However, when necessary, it draws attention and presents directional information more clearly.

With a unified color scheme that resembles weathered iron, it retains a distinctive presence while blending in with both the interior spaces and the garden, further enhancing the connection between the inside and the outside.
