BLUE OCEAN DOME at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan
Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan opens on April 13, 2025. Kenya Hara and the Hara Design Institute handled the exhibition concept and art direction for BLUE OCEAN DOME, where ZERI Japan (NPO) is exhibiting.
The pavilion’s theme is “Revitalization of the Ocean.” The exhibition space consists of three domes. The first space features a spectacular water exhibit that is huge, elaborate, and immaculate. Water flows over a white surface, meandering briskly, similar to how rain that has fallen on mountains eventually circulates back to the oceans. Visitors then pass through a tunnel-like corridor into the second space, where they discover an ultra-high-definition hemispherical screen ten meters in diameter. The earth, with its conflict between the pollution in the oceans and the splendor of living creatures, can be viewed with amazing reality.
The final exhibition space explains actions that we can take in order for the oceans to recover, through events and documentaries presented by experts from around the world. Visitors can also sample Purify: A Primordial Saltwater Tonic, a beverage created by culinary expert Yoshiharu Doi to blend the essence of mountain spring water with pure sea salt, and purchase a book condensing the content exhibited in the pavilion. The three dome spaces created by architect Shigeru Ban, which use bamboo, carbon fiber reinforced plastic, and paper tubes as structural material, are truly remarkable.
