The Sea's Scenario: Setouchi Design Conference - Volume 4, Onomichi & Fukuyama Edition (2023)
What will sustain Japan's economy in the future? When considering this, the tourism industry suddenly shines. The Setouchi Design Conference brings together a diverse group of experts—entrepreneurs, designers, architects, editors, artists, investors, ryotei proprietresses, and monks—all with ties to Setouchi, one of Japan’s premier tourism regions. Focusing not only on Japan but also on the global perspective, the conference explores the future of tourism as an industry. The project is not merely about discussing ideas, but about taking action. The first phase focused on revitalizing a historic ryokan, while the second phase explored the potential of ferry-based tourism. The third phase, held in Kurashiki, delved into the challenges of tourism development, examining its lights and shadows. The fourth phase now moves forward with the concrete realization of the concepts of "islands that move on the sea" and "architecture exhibition."
